Dr Yetunde Celia Adeniyi

Yetunde Adeniyi was born on the 19th of September 1974 in Ekiti State. She attended the University of Ilorin for her first degree in Medicine and Surgery. She had her housemanship at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo and her youth service at the PHC, Matazu, Katsina State. She thereafter worked with the Katsina State and Oyo State Governments at different times. Her residency training in General Psychiatry was at UCH.
Yetunde Adeniyi is Nigeria’s first home grown child and adolescent psychiatrist! After completing training in general psychiatry at the University College Hospital, Ibadan (UCH), she did not relent in her pursuit for further training but proceeded on a 2-year subspecialty training programme (the nation’s first) under the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and was awarded the Advanced Certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ACCAPsych), making her one of the first and very few specialists with this award in Nigeria so far.
After her training, Dr. Adeniyi proceeded to establish a world class Centre in Ibadan, the Centre for Early Development, Learning and care (CEDLAC), to provide well-coordinated multidisciplinary services to children with developmental disorders across Nigeria. The services include mental health services, speech therapy, occupational therapy, special education, physiotherapy and others. This centre is a training ground for students of the University of Ibadan, University College Hospital, students from institutions across the country and professionals from several African countries and beyond who work with children with developmental disorders, thereby, strengthening the town-gown relationship.
She is the focal person for neurodevelopmental disorders in the hospital, working within a rich multidsciplinary team across different clinical units.
Yetunde is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine and the Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CCAMH), University of Ibadan where she is a course leader for several courses helping the sustain this Centre established with funding from the John D and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She is also a Consultant in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
Yetunde is passionate about children with developmental disorders, her involvement at the different levels of prevention and care of the disorders at the university, hospital and community settings are noteworthy. She has been involved in advocacy for developmental disorders including speaking in many schools and organisations within and outside Ibadan, and has featured in over 40 radio and television programmes on issues related to developmental disorders and child mental health.
She is involved in on-site training and consultation services to institutions and homes like the Remand Home, Home School for Handicapped Children, School for the Deaf, and other facilities within Ibadan and beyond the shores of Nigeria. She oversees all services for children with disabilities in UCH and she is well skilled in the assessment of development and Intelligence Quotient (IQ) using different tools such as WISC, KABC-II, Slossans, Ravens, VABS, Mullen Scale etc. She has assessed the IQ of over 120 children in the last 5 years and also trains professionals in the use of these tools.
Yetunde is involved in research among children and adolescents with a special interest in developmental disabilities and has about 35 publications in peer-reviewed journals
She is married to Prof. A.F. Adeniyi of the Department of Physiotherapy, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, the current Deputy Provost of CoMUI, and they are blessed with three lovely children.
