Charlene Gumbo

Dr. Charlene Gumbo is a consultant psychiatrist based in Nairobi, Kenya, dedicated to advancing child, adolescent, and youth mental health through clinical practice, research, leadership, and advocacy. She holds a Master of Medicine in Psychiatry from the University of Nairobi and serves as Principal Corporate Psychiatrist at Chiromo Hospital Group, where she leads multidisciplinary clinical services, mentors emerging mental health professionals, and champions evidence-based psychiatric care.
Dr. Gumbo is an internationally engaged early-career leader, committed to strengthening global collaboration and capacity building in child and adolescent mental health. She currently serves as the Early Career Group Coordinator for the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP), supporting professional development and international mentorship initiatives for young psychiatrists worldwide. In 2027, she will begin her MPhil in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Cape Town, further advancing her commitment to specialist care and academic leadership.
Her research focuses on suicide prevention, ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma, and youth mental health in low-resource settings. Passionate about developing the next generation of mental health leaders, Dr. Gumbo works to promote equitable access to high-quality mental healthcare and to strengthen child and adolescent mental health systems across Africa and beyond.
